Member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (also "Mississaugas of the Credit"), of the Eagle Clan of the Anishinaabe; Anishinaabe name G'Najuwa Wawaskwene ("powerful light in the sky"). Born October 31, 1946 and raised on the reserve near Hagersville, Ontario, where his grandfather Sylvester ("Big Pat") LaForme and father Maurice LaForme both served as chiefs (Wikipedia, Native Leaders of Canada, National Magazine).
Before law, attended technical school and trained/worked as an engineer; the family had relocated to Buffalo, New York in his teens when his father found work (Native Leaders of Canada, The Globe and Mail).
Entered Osgoode Hall Law School (York University, Toronto) at age 27 and graduated with his LL.B. in 1977 — at a time when there were only a handful of Indigenous lawyers in Canada (Wikipedia, Osgoode Digital Commons, Teach For Canada).
