Born in Toronto on September 1, 1938, the son of prominent Toronto lawyer Frederick (Fred) Catzman and Irene Catzman (Osgoode Society; Globe and Mail obituary).
Earned a BA in sociology before law school (Law Times).
Attended the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, 1959–1962, "during the era of Caesar Wright and Bora Laskin," earning his LLB in 1962 (Osgoode Society; Law Times).
