Rita-Jean Maxwell grew up in a small town in northeastern New Brunswick, where her family was the only African-Canadian family in the community. Her father, Dr. Samuel Maxwell, immigrated from Ghana in 1949 and became a medical doctor; he passed away from pancreatic cancer approximately twenty years before her 2017 judicial appointment. Her mother, Irene Maxwell, is a nurse of French (Acadian) and Irish descent who later lived in the Greater Toronto Area. Rita-Jean's parents operated a family medical practice while raising five daughters despite facing racial prejudice, institutional and systemic discrimination, and limited economic resources.
