Sentencing following convictions for repeated sexual assault, sexual interference, and physical assaults committed by an adult offender against a vulnerable child over approximately two years.
The court held that denunciation, deterrence, and separation from society predominated under the Criminal Code, found the complainant's age, vulnerability, grooming, repeated intercourse, violence, non-traditional trust relationship, and concealment from child protection authorities to be significant aggravating factors, and gave minimal weight to the offender's own abuse history.
The court declined to grant credit for restrictive bail conditions because the offender breached those conditions and reoffended while on release.
A penitentiary sentence of eight years was imposed together with lifetime sex offender registration, DNA, weapons prohibition, and lifetime child-contact restrictions.
