Maria V. Carroccia was born in 1962 in Windsor, Ontario, the eldest of four children in a close-knit Italian-Canadian family. Her father, Angelo, immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1954 in his mid-twenties and settled in Windsor, where he worked as a construction crane operator. Her mother, Assunta, was a homemaker. Neither parent had completed grade school, and neither spoke English as a first language. As the oldest child, young Maria frequently served as her parents' intermediary when dealing with government agencies and English-speaking institutions — an early experience that shaped her understanding of how ordinary people navigate complex systems. Despite their limited formal education, her parents strongly encouraged their children's schooling.
