Before his appointment to the judiciary, Justice Joseph R. Henderson practised law at Chown & Cairns (later Chown Cairns LLP), a prominent full-service law firm based in St. Catharines, Ontario, serving the Niagara region. The firm traced its origins to 1953, when Mackenzie Chown and Roy Cairns began practising law together, and was formally established as Cavers, Chown and Cairns in 1957 alongside Harry P. Cavers, a former Member of Parliament and County Court judge. Henderson was one of several Chown & Cairns lawyers who went on to distinguished judicial careers, alongside the late Justice Donald Taliano and Justice Eileen Martin.
Chown & Cairns was a significant Niagara institution whose lawyers were instrumental in the formation of many important regional bodies, including the Niagara Catholic District School Board, Lincoln Trust Company (later Canada Trust), Casino Niagara, and the development of the hotel and tourism industry in Niagara Falls. The firm later merged in 2022 with Lancaster Brooks & Welch LLP, Broderick & Partners LLP, and Graves & Richard P.C. to form Lancaster, Chown & Welch LLP.
