Ontario College of Teachers v Pellegrini, 2001 ONOCT 16

Teacher found guilty of professional misconduct for defrauding school board and holding unauthorized employment.

The Ontario College of Teachers brought discipline proceedings against a member who was employed as a Coordinator of Arts/Physical Health Education by a school board.

The member was alleged to have defrauded the board by authorizing payments to his brother for a plagiarized music curriculum, failing to remit ticket sales from a school production, and holding unauthorized employment as a principal at a private school.

The Discipline Committee found the member guilty of professional misconduct, noting his prior criminal conviction for fraud related to the same conduct.

Ontario College of Teachers v. Lachaine, 2001 ONOCT 11

Teacher found not guilty of professional misconduct for allegedly misrepresenting his qualifications as an engineer.

The Ontario College of Teachers alleged that the member committed professional misconduct by providing false information about his professional qualifications, specifically claiming to have an engineering degree.

Following a hearing, the Discipline Committee found that the school principal had misinterpreted the member's qualifications during a telephone interview and that the member had not falsely represented himself as an engineer on his resume or otherwise.

The Committee found the member not guilty of all charges.

Ontario College of Teachers v. Poremba, 2001 ONOCT 18

Teacher suspended for 112 days for inappropriate late-night internet communications with a student.

The member, a high school teacher, engaged in inappropriate and unprofessional internet communications with a 17-year-old female student in his class.

The communications occurred late at night and contained sexual overtones.

Based on an Agreed Statement of Facts, the Discipline Committee found the member guilty of professional misconduct.

The Committee ordered a 112-day suspension of his teaching certificate and directed him to attend psychological counselling for a minimum of one year.

Ontario College of Teachers v. Korjus, 2001 ONOCT 10

Teacher suspended for four months and reprimanded for making homophobic comments about a colleague.

The Ontario College of Teachers brought disciplinary proceedings against a member for professional misconduct.

The member admitted to making disparaging and homophobic comments to staff, students, and parents about a newly hired teacher whose photograph appeared in a newspaper covering the Gay Pride Parade.

The member's conduct contributed to a hostile environment that ultimately caused the new teacher to leave the school.

The Discipline Committee accepted a joint submission on penalty, finding the member guilty of professional misconduct.

The Committee ordered a reprimand, a four-month suspension of the member's teaching certificate, and the successful completion of a course on homophobia prior to returning to teaching.
