The College of Nurses of Ontario brought disciplinary proceedings against a registered nurse for physically abusing a client.
During a restraint procedure on an agitated psychiatric client who was spitting, the nurse placed a pillow over the client's face and subsequently hit the client in the face.
The nurse admitted to the allegations of professional misconduct, acknowledging her actions constituted physical abuse and disgraceful, dishonourable, or unprofessional conduct.
The Discipline Committee accepted an agreed statement of facts and a joint submission on penalty, ordering a six-month suspension, an oral reprimand, and conditions on her certificate of registration requiring employer evaluations and further education.
