Minister orders implementation of an open market system for Ontario hogs by December 2010.
The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs reviewed a decision of the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal regarding the Ontario Pork Producers' Marketing Board.
The Minister confirmed the Tribunal's decisions requiring the Commission to appoint a new Chair to the Hog Industry Advisory Committee, allowing the Board to collect and disseminate aggregate price information, and authorizing the Board to collect fees on all classes of hogs.
However, the Minister rescinded the Tribunal's narrow interpretation of section 2 of the Farm Products Marketing Act.
Finally, the Minister substituted the Tribunal's decision regarding the marketing of hogs, ordering the implementation of an open market system by December 4, 2010, and allowing the Board to submit its proposed governance changes to the Commission without further consultation.
