1In Interim Decision 2014 HRTO 721 the applicant’s May 16, 2014 request to adjourn a summary hearing into her Application was denied because she had provided no information regarding the medical condition that she claimed would prevent her from participating in the summary hearing.

2On May 23, 2014 she renewed her request and indicated that she had been hospitalised for a serious psychiatric illness. She undertook to provide the Tribunal and the respondent with a letter from her psychiatrist when she has her next appointment on May 29, 2014. The letter will outline what her condition is and why it prevents her from participating in a summary hearing. Her request identified support persons who are currently assisting the applicant.

3The summary hearing was scheduled for May 26, 2014 by teleconference. The applicant did not participate. I indicated to the respondent that I would address the applicant’s second adjournment request during the teleconference, as it had not yet been decided.

4In light of the fact that the applicant is representing herself and has been dealing with a serious illness, I am of the view that there are exceptional circumstances that would justify granting an adjournment. The decision to grant the adjournment is based on the expectation that the applicant will provide the letter she has promised.

5The respondent has a legitimate interest in having these proceedings dealt with efficiently. If the applicant wishes to find someone to assist her with her Application, then she and her support persons will have a month in which to try to find assistance for the applicant. The Registrar is requested to reschedule the summary hearing to a date after June 30, 2014.

6The applicant’s request to adjourn is granted. The applicant is to provide the respondent and the Tribunal with a letter from her doctor by June 4, 2014.
