The accused, a first-time offender, was convicted after trial of multiple assaults against his two young daughters, sometimes using a weapon, and one assault against his wife when she attempted to intervene.
The Crown sought 18-24 months' incarceration, while the defence sought a conditional sentence order.
The court found that while the accused posed a low risk to the community, a conditional sentence would not adequately address the paramount sentencing objectives of denunciation and deterrence given the profound breach of trust, the pattern of violence, and the exposure of the children to intimate partner violence.
The accused was sentenced to 12 months' incarceration followed by two years of probation.
