The defendant was charged with stunt driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident under the Highway Traffic Act following a fatal collision.
The defendant engaged in a high-speed interaction with a motorcycle, swerved to avoid a cyclist, and the motorcycle subsequently struck the cyclist and an oncoming vehicle, resulting in two fatalities.
The court rejected the defendant's evidence regarding his speed, relying on expert video speed analysis to find he was travelling at least 116 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
The court also rejected the defendant's mistake of fact defence, finding he was directly involved in the accident and fully aware of the collision but chose to flee the scene.
The defendant was found guilty of both offences.
